There’s been a flood of teeth whitening services and products in the market place, but are all of them safe?
Not necessarily according to the Irish Dental Association (IDA). The group has expressed concerns about the health risks that are associated with unsupervised tooth whitening.
According to the IDA, high doses of hydrogen peroxide, the active ingredient in whitening products, can cause burning of the gums, mouth, and esophagus when used incorrectly.
Fintan Hourihan, chief executive of the IDA, said the organization had written to the Minister for Health Dr James Reilly seeking his support for a proposed new EU directive to regulate the sector.
Under the proposals, products with 0.1% of hydrogen peroxide would be freely available to the public while products with 0.1% to 6% would be first used under the supervision of a dentist and thereafter by prescription.
