Oral Health and Systemic Health

Why does the dental hygienist recommend more than 1 visit per year ?

Getting your teeth cleaned is not just for your oral health, but it is also very important to your systemic health. The bacteria filled material called tarter, that sits under your gum line causing infection,  is what is removed when you are getting your teeth cleaned. That same bacteria in tarter is now being found in the blood vessels of people with severe gum disease, because it travels from the mouth into the rest of the body.

Gum disease has been linked to diabetes, heart disease and premature birth weights. Your oral cavity is the beginning of your systemic system, so it makes sense that an infection in the mouth would affect the rest of your body.

It is recommended to visit your dental hygienist for teeth cleanings at least 2 times per year for good oral and overall health.
