Dry mouth is an uncomfortable condition that is a common side effect of medications, or medical treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation. It increases the risk of developing cavities, can cause halitosis (bad breath) and can even make it difficult to chew and swallow food.
Some products that may help sooth and moisten dry mouth are:
1) Biotene- Mints, gum, mouth rinse and toothpaste. These can be found in the drugstore and online.
2) Colgate dry mouth rinse- found in the drugstore.
3) ACT- mouth rinse, tooth paste, lozangers. These are sweetened with xylitol, which is a cavity fighting sweetener. Also, found in drug stores.
4) Xylitol gum- helps stimulate saliva and fight against cavities. Found in natural food grocery stores, such as Whole Foods.
Some dietary tips for dry mouth:
It is important to remember to always carry a water bottle with you if you suffer from dry mouth. Taking small sips of water continuously throughout the day will also help moisten the tissues.
Crunchy, healthy foods such as carrots and nuts also help to stimulate salivary flow.
