At Pearl, we offer teeth whitening in Vancouver. Since 2014, we’ve collaborated with patients looking for whiter, brighter smiles. However, we do a lot more. As dental hygienists, we create smiles that are beautiful and healthy. But have you ever wondered why teeth go yellow in the first place? Is there anything you can do to prevent it? Read on to find out!
Okay, we get yellow teeth isn’t as urgent as other dental considerations, but it doesn’t feel good. As it turns out, discolouration can be caused by a lot of different factors. It can be genetics—or even the foods you eat every day. Here are just a few examples for consideration.
We know, ironic. Yes, brushing can lead to yellowing teeth. How? By brushing too hard, you can wear away the protective enamel, allowing the yellow-brown dentin below the surface of your teeth to show through. This is why dental professionals always recommend using a medium or soft-bristled toothbrush.
Not too much can be done here—if your parent’s teeth tend to run more yellowish, it’s likely yours will, too. Teeth whitening can be a good solution for people predisposed to duller smiles. Laser teeth whitening can sometimes get you what nature didn’t.
Without good oral hygiene, you can’t efficiently remove the sticky, cavity-causing plaque build-up that eventually hardens into yellowish tartar. Address this by brushing at least twice for two minutes per day—and flossing once. Rinse after snacks and meals. And don’t forget—schedule a professional dental cleaning at least twice a year. Staining tends to stick to plaque and tartar more easily than a clean tooth surface.
Curry, red wine, coffee, berries—many of our favourite foods contain heavy dyes that can stick to the teeth, making them look discoloured. This can also be caused by certain habits—like smoking or chewing tobacco. If you’ve eaten something, we recommend brushing—but NOT right after. Many foods cause an increase in acidity, so your protective enamel wears easier. Wait about 20 minutes and brush—or swish with mouthwash or even water immediately after a meal.
This isn’t exactly natural. Tetracycline antibiotics stain teeth, even when they’re developing in the gums, which means antibiotic use before the age of eight can stain teeth. Trauma or accidents near or in the mouth can also damage enamel, leading to discoloration. In either event, it’s best to speak to a dental professional—whitening the surface of the tooth may not be sufficient to address these challenges.

Our boutique-style clinic is a relaxing, pleasant environment—and every treatment is administered one-on-one by skilled dental hygienists who work to maximize your comfort and safety.
