Screening Exam

Using Velscope technology, our technicians will scan your mouth, checking the cheeks, roof, floor, and more for visible abnormalities.

The incidence of oral cancer is still increasing in North America. Unlike other cancers, the survival rate for oral cancer has remained unchanged for decades. The overall 5-year survival rate for oral cancer is 52%, but when discovered early, it increases dramatically.

VELscope offers a painless, non-invasive way to screen for abnormal tissue in the mouth. Without the need for stains or rinses, the examination takes just one or two minutes.

REFERRALS

If any abnormalities are detected during your oral cancer screening, we will make the appropriate referrals. We have a base for highly recommended dentists when additional treatment may be needed. If an issue is detected, further steps are only taken with your participation and at your request.

VELscope Exam

The VELscope Exam relies on an oral tissue screening tool that is commonly used in oral pathology labs as well as hospitals. The VELscope System Handpiece emits a safe blue light into the oral cavity, which excites the tissue, causing it to fluoresce. Our clinician is then able to immediately view the different fluorescence responses to help differentiate between normal and abnormal tissue.

There is a pay parking garage in the building. Free parking is available on 15th Avenue, 16th Avenue, and Fir Street (both north and south of 16th Avenue). Shaughnessy has residential free parking all day and is only 1-2 blocks from the clinic. Please account for 2-3 hours of parking!
